Thank you for visiting DrSears.com.  Medicine is not as complicated as we think, and likewise nutrition is not as simple as we are led to believe.  My goal at DrSears.com is to make you think about both medicine and nutrition from a new perspective.  That new perspective is based upon understanding the molecular basis of inflammation.  It’s about how inflammation is the underlying cause of chronic disease, and how our diet can either reduce inflammation or increase it.

In the final analysis, it’s all about your genes,  especially how an anti-inflammatory diet, like the Zone Diet, can turn off inflammatory genes and simultaneously turn on anti-inflammatory genes that promote cellular rejuvenation, repair and healing.  Your ability to control inflammation becomes the molecular definition of wellness.   This is why I hope you will use DrSears.com as your destination site to get the latest breaking information on anti-inflammatory medicine and its impact on 21st-century health care.

Q: I have a friend that has stomach cancer. She has lost a lot of weight. I want to recommend your diet for the anti-inflammatory effect and the fish oil, but she is afraid of losing more weight. What about the exercise? I understand that muscles are part of her immune system reserve, but she is also afraid of exercising and losing weight. She had a surgery where they took great part of her stomach, and she is now with chemos. How much fish oil should she take? Should she be having a different routine of exercise? Maybe more strength and less cardio?

Thanks a lot, Maria

Dear Maria,

A: Her weight loss is due to increased formation of tumor necrosis factor (TNF). Adding extra fish oil will decrease its formation. The data indicates that up to 20 grams of EPA and DHA is fine, but I would suggest starting at about 7.5 grams of EPA and DHA per day and perhaps increasing to 15 grams per day until she stops losing weight. The Zone Diet should be viewed as an anti-inflammatory diet; not a weight-loss diet. It will dramatically enhance the anti-inflammatory benefits of the fish oil.

I recently returned from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) annual meeting profoundly disappointed. The only truly interesting seminars focused on the “benefits” of gastric bypass surgery to treat diabetes. I say “benefits” because the most-used drugs appear to only accelerate earlier death from diabetes, and the best dietary management appears to be discounted sales of ADA cookbooks (all in glorious color) that continually stress the benefits of low-fat, high-carbohydrate meals.

First off, I want to give my sincerest thanks to Dr. Sears for researching and coming up with this most reasonable of eating plans. It has changed my life. I am 63 years old and have never been diabetic in the past, but I was severely overweight.

In May of 2008, just out of curiosity, I asked a diabetic co-worker of mine to check my blood sugar on her glucose meter. She told me she would on the next day, but that I shouldn't eat breakfast until after the test. As it turned out, my fasting blood glucose was 428! She retested me a few more times over the next two weeks, and it was still in the low 400s. She advised me to immediately seek medical care and get on insulin.

Dr. Sears’ 2010 Zone Cruise will explore the emerging science of epigenetics, the way that external factors, especially diet, can alter gene expression. The implications for the treatment of obesity and for changing the way our mind perceives the world around us are profound.
