Thank you for visiting DrSears.com.  Medicine is not as complicated as we think, and likewise nutrition is not as simple as we are led to believe.  My goal at DrSears.com is to make you think about both medicine and nutrition from a new perspective.  That new perspective is based upon understanding the molecular basis of inflammation.  It’s about how inflammation is the underlying cause of chronic disease, and how our diet can either reduce inflammation or increase it.

In the final analysis, it’s all about your genes,  especially how an anti-inflammatory diet, like the Zone Diet, can turn off inflammatory genes and simultaneously turn on anti-inflammatory genes that promote cellular rejuvenation, repair and healing.  Your ability to control inflammation becomes the molecular definition of wellness.   This is why I hope you will use DrSears.com as your destination site to get the latest breaking information on anti-inflammatory medicine and its impact on 21st-century health care.

Q: I just recently started taking your fish oil capsules two months ago on the recommendation of my boss. I was complaining of hair loss. Although my hair isn't growing back in, my skin feels great, and my nails are long and strong. I also feel more focused. She also said there is some research to the efficacy of fish oil for children with autism. I have four children; three have autism. They are 11, and 10-year-old twin boys. They weigh 100, 95, and 82 pounds. What is your recommended dosage for them in order to be effective? I have to buy a liquid because it is too hard for them to swallow capsules.

A:  The research is strongly suggestive that autism is strongly associated with a deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids.  The same is true with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).  Our published research indicated that 15 grams per day of omega-3 fatty acids in liquid significantly improved the behavior of children with ADHD who were already taking their optimal drug dosage to manage the condition.  I would suggest starting at 10 grams of EPA and DHA in a liquid format.  In our studies we used SeaHealth Plus to emulsify the liquid EPA and DHA for better absorption.

The common refrain for treating obesity is simply “eat less and exercise more”.  With obesity rates increasing, how is it possible that so many Americans seem to be unable to follow such simple instructions?  The answer may lie in our genes.

Five years ago in April at age 45 I was diagnosed with lupus. My doc could not figure out what was causing repeated bouts of increasingly terrible shoulder and back pain. Finally, when suffering so much pain I could barely move, I was taken to the hospital in an ambulance. A CAT scan revealed that I had been suffering from flare-ups of pericarditis for two years. Further tests showed that I had several typical Lupus antibodies. My immune system was attacking the connective tissue surrounding my heart, the pericardium.
