Thank you for visiting DrSears.com.  Medicine is not as complicated as we think, and likewise nutrition is not as simple as we are led to believe.  My goal at DrSears.com is to make you think about both medicine and nutrition from a new perspective.  That new perspective is based upon understanding the molecular basis of inflammation.  It’s about how inflammation is the underlying cause of chronic disease, and how our diet can either reduce inflammation or increase it.

In the final analysis, it’s all about your genes,  especially how an anti-inflammatory diet can turn off inflammatory genes and simultaneously turn on anti-inflammatory genes that promote cellular rejuvenation, repair and healing.  Your ability to control inflammation becomes the molecular definition of wellness.   This is why I hope you will use DrSears.com as your destination site to get the latest breaking information on anti-inflammatory medicine and its impact on 21st-century health care.

Q: In all your books you consider a moderate daily training the best for the Zone Diet. How is it possible to consider that the CrossFit training program (very intensive work) is better?

Many thanks, Claudio A.

Dear Claudio,

A:  I define moderate daily training as about 30 minutes per day using a varying schedule of exercises (aerobic, anaerobic and flexibility) at a moderate level of intensity.  This is a schedule that most people can hopefully comply with for a long-term basis.  CrossFit training is done at much higher intensity, but for shorter duration.  The higher intensity training will cause greater release of growth hormone in response to this type of training, but it also requires more rest between training sessions.  Growth hormone is a very powerful fat-burning and muscle-building hormone so you maximize your total exercise benefits.  Unfortunately, most people simply don’t have that type of exercise discipline.

We are led to believe that statins are the greatest drugs the pharmaceutical industry has ever developed. It is true that they are the most profitable drugs ever developed, but they only reduce cardiovascular mortality by about 20 percent compared to a placebo.  This means that about 80 percent of the people taking statins to reduce elevated cholesterol will see no impact on their mortality from heart disease.  Furthermore, nearly 50 percent of individuals who have heart attacks also have normal cholesterol levels. So much for the major marketing message sent to Americans that cholesterol causes heart disease.

"You have diabetes. Your blood sugar is 311. The doctor wants you to take two medications. Where can I call the prescriptions in?" The nurse on the line delivered the news with a matter-of-fact tone. I felt like I'd been gut-punched. I knew I was overweight -- more than I'd ever been, but I had fooled myself into thinking I was reasonably OK. Then over Christmas I started having upper abdominal pain. My lifestyle was catching up with me, and I was worried about what was going on.
