Thank you for visiting DrSears.com.  Medicine is not as complicated as we think, and likewise nutrition is not as simple as we are led to believe.  My goal at DrSears.com is to make you think about both medicine and nutrition from a new perspective.  That new perspective is based upon understanding the molecular basis of inflammation.  It’s about how inflammation is the underlying cause of chronic disease, and how our diet can either reduce inflammation or increase it.

In the final analysis, it’s all about your genes,  especially how an anti-inflammatory diet, like the Zone Diet, can turn off inflammatory genes and simultaneously turn on anti-inflammatory genes that promote cellular rejuvenation, repair and healing.  Your ability to control inflammation becomes the molecular definition of wellness.   This is why I hope you will use DrSears.com as your destination site to get the latest breaking information on anti-inflammatory medicine and its impact on 21st-century health care.

Q: I have acquired an increasing incidence of GERD.  Looking back, the symptoms seem to have started and escalated around four years ago when I first started on the Zone. Now, the GERD seems to act up a few times a year and lasts longer and longer.  This time I can't shake it. Not only do I have more acid reflux, but it seems that my lower esophageal sphincter (LES) no longer shuts tightly as it should.

Could this be related to my much higher protein intake since I started on the Zone? If yes, what is it doing to my LES and how do I correct this? THANKS.  The Zone has profoundly improved my life.

A:  GERD is a consequence of overproduction of acid in the stomach.  What I suggest is taking about 2.5 grams of EPA and DHA per day coupled with about 2 mg. of GLA.  The small amounts of GLA can be metabolized into the eicosanoid PGE1 that will inhibit the acid secretion in the stomach.  The combination of the Zone Diet and the extra EPA should minimize the conversion of the added GLA into arachidonic acid (i.e. toxic fat).

We are led to believe that statins are the greatest drugs the pharmaceutical industry has ever developed. It is true that they are the most profitable drugs ever developed, but they only reduce cardiovascular mortality by about 20 percent compared to a placebo.  This means that about 80 percent of the people taking statins to reduce elevated cholesterol will see no impact on their mortality from heart disease.  Furthermore, nearly 50 percent of individuals who have heart attacks also have normal cholesterol levels. So much for the major marketing message sent to Americans that cholesterol causes heart disease.

Thank you for your well-studied Zone program.  I have used it successfully to eliminate symptoms of ADHD that I've had since childhood.  I have also used the Zone to lose weight from time to time, as needed (i.e. after getting out of the Zone during holidays!).
