Breast-Feeding’s Heart Benefits

Breast-feeding has many benefits. Now a new study found it may reduce a woman's risk for cardiovascular disease later in life. Researchers recorded pre-pregnancy cardiovascular risk factors in 846 women starting in 1985. Then, 20 years later, they used ultrasound to measure the thickness of their carotid arteries - an indication of the extent of atherosclerosis, a risk factor for heart disease.

Obviously, the hormones induced by breast-feeding may have a role to play in the cardiovascular benefits for the mother.  More importantly, it emphasizes that the long-term health benefits of breast-feeding is a two-way street for the mother and child.
