Can Inflammation Cause Depression?

What if depression was just a side effect of inflammation in the body? What if we felt emotionally crappy simply because our body was also down in the dumps? Some experts are suggesting that depression could just be a reaction to higher levels of inflammation in the body, and that it's not just a psychological condition.

Of course, depression is related to inflammation. This is why intervention trials in mono- and bi-polar depression with high-dose fish oil have been shown to be very effective treatments.  As shown by Harvard Medical School more than 25 years ago in the New England Journal of Medicine, they reduce cytokine formation.
