Any dietary intervention that improves gut microbial health will improve mood by reducing the entry of bacteria into the blood where it can initiate inflammatory responses via toll-like receptors. However, prebiotics, such as polyphenols, may be more important than probiotics for improved gut health because they are less susceptible to destruction during intestinal transient.
