Dr. Barry Sears Dr. Sears Comments:

The risk of diabetes with statins is real.  It is not clear the benefits of statins in heart disease are all that great compared to diet and exercise. Heart disease mortality has been dropping in a linear fashion since 1972.  Statins were introduced in 1994.  There was no great increase in the reduction of heart disease mortality with the use of statins.  The biggest reason for the reduction of heart disease mortality has been the reduction of smoking.
