Fat but fit is possible  if you don’t have insulin resistance.  That is the case for about 15-25% of obese individuals. However, insulin resistance can increase with time so that 100% of individuals  with pre-diabetes (both  fat and thin) has severe insulin resistance.  The best way to control insulin resistance to lose excess fat and stay physically active.  Your success is indicated by keep the TG/HDL ratio less than 1.
