Fish Oil Modifies Gut Bacteria to Boost Health: Study

Fish oil changes the makeup of gut bacteria in ways that may account for its health benefits, new research suggests. In a study published in the journal Cell Metabolism, scientists with the University of Gothenburg reported that diets rich in fish oil versus those laden with animal fats produce very different bacteria in the guts of mice.

This careful study demonstrates that saturated fats increase gut permeability (i.e., leaky gut), whereas omega-3 fats decrease it .  This is important as it is the entry of gram-negative bacteria and bacteria fragments, such as LPS, that increase inflammation, causing what is known as metabolic endotoxemia.  Metabolic endotoxemia is another newly discovered inflammatory driver of obesity and diabetes.
