Fructose belongs to a group of ingredients known as FODMAPs. These are poorly absorbed, but fermentable sugars. It is not the fructose per se, but the fermentation products of excess fructose that may cause the problem. It has been shown that high levels of polyphenols prevent such problems possibly by their interaction with gut bacteria.
