Is Lipid Management a Sham?

Why do we continue to treat cholesterol numbers with fibrates and supplements like fish oil and niacin? Do patients need to starve for lipid panels? Do certain patients even need lipid panels? Does cholesterol medication work? Do statins work? Are medications at all necessary for primary prevention in low-risk patients?

It may be, but not for the reasons mentioned in the article.  The real concern is to prevent death, and that comes from the rupture of soft vulnerable plaques caused by inflammation.  I would work on following an anti-inflammatory diet rather cholesterol reduction.  Of course, if you follow an anti-inflammatory diet, cholesterol levels drop because insulin levels drop.
