Maternal Depression Often Starts Before Giving Birth, Study Says

A large new study has documented unexpected links in the timing and severity of symptoms of maternal depression, which could help mothers and doctors better anticipate and treat the condition.

The most likely reason is the fetal depletion of the omega-3 fatty acid stores of the mother.  In the last trimester of pregnancy the fetal brain is producing 250,000 new brain cells per minute, and this requires a lot of omega-3 fatty acids that can only come from the mother.  If the mother’s levels of omega-3 fatty acids drop below a critical threshold, neurological disorders, such as depression, can be easily manifested.
