Obesity and Diabetes: Call It Diabesity?

Parallel trends in diabetes and obesity have led clinicians to think about these metabolic disorders as 2 parts of a whole, calling the umbrella condition "diabesity" (obesity-related diabetes). Diabesity is quickly transforming into a global health crisis that is no longer limited to developed countries. Existing guidelines do not address optimal medical management of diabesity.

Diabesity is simply a continuum of increasing severity of insulin resistance. The more insulin resistant you are, the greater the likelihood of being obese. ¬†Once you are severely insulin resistance, you then enter into a world of metabolic disorders in which the risks of fatty liver, diabetes, heart disease, and finally Alzheimer’s are all significantly elevated.
