Overweight patients live longer in study

People who were obese before they developed heart failure, a condition caused by the heart's inability to pump enough blood to the body, lived longer than their more svelte counterparts, despite higher rates of hypertension and diabetes, a new study finds.

Overweight and obese individuals have greater muscle mass since they are essentially weight training 24 hours a day with their extra body weight.  This makes their muscles stronger, including those in the heart.  Furthermore, stored body fat is high-octane fuel for making ATP.  This is especially true if the obese individuals fall into the class of “metabolically healthy obese,” who carry extra weight, but without the inflammation normally caused by obesity.
