The microbiome has a direct link to the brain via the vagus nerve.  Altering the microbiome by probiotics is virtually worthless, however, the combination of fermentable fiber (i.e. prebiotics), polyphenols, and omega-3 fatty acids can alter the microbiome and in particular one microbe (Akkermansia muciniphila) that appears to control that vagus nerve highway.
