Pulling Just One All-Nighter Might Have Some Serious Health Consequences

The hormonal changes of a single night of sleep deprivation will increase both cortisol and insulin resistance. Furthermore, the lack of REM sleep with make it difficult to consolidate short-term memory into long-term storage for latter recall.  I did an interesting experiments several years ago with medical interns undergoing two weeks of sleep deprivation. One group received prepared Zone meals and omega-3 fatty acids and the other group did not.  After four weeks of continued sleep  deprivation (no more than 4 hours of sleep per night), the medical interns getting the Zone meals and fish oil had a higher level of cognitive function and lower levels of inflammation than when they first started.  The other group was a mess both cognitively and metabolically.
