Part of the reason for maternal depression during pregnancy is the lack of omega-3 fatty acids in the diet of the mother.  The fetus is pulling omega-3 fatty acids out of the mother’s reserves to make new fetal brain cells.  If the mother is not replenishing those omega-3 fatty acids (especially in the brain), the result can be depression
