Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disorder like rheumatoid arthritis. This may explain why four times more women have rheumatoid arthritis than men.  It may be that they have increased susceptibility to inflammatory disorders and therefore more likely to experience the adverse consequences, such as death.
