Bone marrow diseases and the omega-3 fatty acids

Last Updated Aug 2007

Q: My aunt told me to drop you a line. I have some questions about bone marrow diseases and how you think the omega-3 fatty acids can help. My boyfriend has aplastic anemia. He is currently undergoing treatment at Mt. Sinai in NY. My aunt Randi is a nutritionist in New York City and raves about you. She's a big believer in the fish oil and has me taking yours. What do you think about fish oils and bone marrow disorder/autoimmune diseases?

Best, Jen

A: Dear Jen,

Autoimmune disorders are basically the body's immune system attacking itself. Before one thinks about using immuno-supressing drugs in this condition, high-dose fish oil would be a good alternative.
