Iodine

Last Updated Sep 2007

Q: Recently my chiropractor asked me to participate in a test to measure iodine in the body. He applied a yellow coating in a patch on my arm and asked me to observe how long it remained. If it went away quickly, it would indicate that I was deficient in iodine. The yellow patch faded but remained visible for 33 hours. When I told the doctor, he was surprised, as almost everyone sees it fade in less than 24 hours. In trying to figure out why I have higher than usual iodine, I thought perhaps it was because I use Celtic Sea Salt. But then later, I realized that it was probably because I use SeaHealth Plus (an ounce a day for the past six months). Do you think it likely that the cause of my high iodine levels is due to my taking SeaHealth Plus?

A: The only real way to measure iodine levels is by a blood test. If your thyroid levels are normal, then your iodine levels are normal.
