Hiatal hernia

Last Updated Sep 2007

Q: Can a person who suffers from hiatal hernia and isn't overweight follow The Zone Diet? What would you recommend? Smaller meals? More fat than the amount of protein?

A: A hiatal hernia occurs when the muscle tissue surrounding the opening between the stomach and the esophagus becomes weak and the upper part of the stomach bulges into the chest cavity. Anything that puts a pressure on this area can cause pain. The Zone Diet can help reduce the amount of stomach acid being produced because you are eating small meals that require lesser amounts of stomach acid for digestion.
