Dr. Sears' research and major depression
Last Updated Sep 2007
Q: How can the physiological science of Zone eating impact positively chronic major depression and even other serious major mental health problems? I have had major depression since 1993 with only a partial remission at best. I have tried all of the usual psychiatric recommendations, but no one has recommended diet as part of a strategy for recovery. Can you?
Thank you, Janet S.
A: Dear Janet,
Fish oil (EPA/DHA) promotes the production of "good" eicosanoids. It's this balance of AA/EPA that is so critical. Research has shown that depressed patients have elevated levels of AA/EPA. Decreasing this ratio leads to a corresponding decrease in depression.
