Joint pain

Q: My wife has lost 20 pounds since last summer on her own and recently started your Zone Diet with shakes in an effort to lose 60 pounds more. She also has a lot of pain in her knees, which a doctor says are degenerated to the point where they need joint replacement, but she wishes to avoid the surgery as long as possible. She has also started taking 6 capsules a day of a Nikken Joint supplement to try to help control her chronic pain. Would you recommend taking fish oil supplement in addition or instead? If yes, then which kind and approximately how much?
A: She needs a lot more EPA and DHA. She is currently getting about 0.45 grams of EPA and DHA with the Nikken product. She would probably need in the range of 5-7.5 grams per day of EPA and DHA. This represents a 10 to 15 fold increase in EPA and DHA.
