Fish oil and toddlers

Last Updated Sep 2007

Q: My 1-year-old grandson just converted to regular milk from a formula that contained DHA. How much fish oil is appropriate for his age and at what age would we increase the dosage?

Jack

A: Dear Jack,

Your son will need both EPA and DHA. The milk formula contains just DHA. I would recommend about 1 gram per day of EPA and DHA until the age of 2 when it should be increased to 2 grams per day. The easiest way is to add ultra-refined liquid fish oil to solid foods.
