Q: Spirulina is rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), and also provides alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), linoleic acid (LA), stearidonic acid (SDA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and arachidonic acid (AA). Having read many of yours analyses, what is your opinion of supplementing Zone Diet with Spirulina powder or tablets?
Thanks, Drago
A: Dear Drago,
Spirulina does contain GLA, EPA, and DHA. Although spirulina is rich in vitamins and minerals, it is very low in total fat content. As a result, the amount of spirulina you would need to consume is in the order of pounds per day. Another good source of vitamins and minerals (but also containing virtually no essential fatty acids) is de-bittered brewer?s yeast.
