Q: My daughter's boyfriend, 24 years of age, has lost sight in one eye with only retaining slight peripheral vision and minor loss of same in the other eye. He has gone through extensive tests (spinal tap, CAT scan, etc.) and has been diagnosed with inflammation of the brain of some sort causing the problem. The doctor has administrated steroid treatment, but it hasn't done any good. Do you think that mega doses of OmegaRx would help or alleviate the inflammation in the brain?
Dean W.
Dear Dean,
A: Drugs such as corticosteroids have great difficulty crossing the blood-brain barrier to reduce inflammation. On the other hand, omega-3 fatty acids, such as EPA and DHA, have no trouble entering the brain. At high enough levels, they can exert a powerful anti-inflammatory effect. I would suggest using at least 10 grams per day of EPA and DHA to reduce the inflammation in the brain.
