RA and PPS

Last Updated Nov 2007

Q: I have had RA (rheumatoid arthritis) for six years and pustular psoriasis for two years. I also have total colonic hypomotility and severe GERD, anxiety and panic.  I am currently on Orencia, Cyclosporine, Prevacid, Inderal LA, Folic Acid, Exovac, Elavil, Zoloft, Ambien CR, Miralax, and Xanax.  I was recently told by a relative that I need to take the Omega-3 Fish Oil. He has been on the Zone for nine years and is totally healthy.  I am afraid to try this fish oil and the vitamins because I am afraid it will interfere with all the drugs in my system.  What do you suggest?

A: The extra fish oil will make the drugs you are taking for the arthritis and psoriasis work better since both conditions arise from increased inflammation. Likewise, the anti-depressant drugs will work better because fish oil will be synergistic with their molecular mode of action. I would start with about 5 grams of EPA and DHA per day, and then follow how you feel. If you are seeing significant improvement in the arthritis and psoriasis, as well as the depression, consider discussing with your physician about the possibility of reducing your drug usage.
