Hello, Dr. Sears,
I did follow your diet for about five to six months last year and definitely saw and felt the results. I found it difficult to stick to and fell off the Zone wagon. I have recently discovered that I have one kidney that is not fully functioning. As you may know, it is recommended to stick to a low-protein diet when the kidneys are not functioning well. I tried being a vegetarian many, many years ago, but it did not work at all for me. Do you have any suggestions or recommendations?
Thank you, Ingrid
Hi, Ingrid,
The Zone is a protein-adequate diet, which likely would qualify as a "low-protein" diet. I recommend an average of 77 grams of lean protein (equivalent to two six-ounce cans of tuna fish) spread throughout the day and consumed with non-starchy vegetables and fruits. This combination of P/C/F balances insulin levels and coupled with fish oil supplementation (4 caps of OmegaRx) will enhance the production of "good" eicosanoids. Establishing a favorable balance will promote oxygen transfer and vasodilatation assisting your kidneys to function more efficiently.
Applying the Zone is simple and easy, see:
I hope you find this helpful.
