Q: Dr. Sears, I'm in my mid 30s, not overweight (bf 11 percent), but I suffer from gynecomastia and can't seem to get rid of it. I did some steroid cycles about 10 years ago, and my doctor says that it's something that won't go away and that the cause might be a hormonal disorder/imbalance. My concern is that it's tender, and it bothers me on a daily basis. At this point all I want is for the swelling and the tenderness to go away. Can increasing my intake of omegas help? If so, how much?
A: Increased omega-3 fatty acids will help decrease the tenderness. I would recommend about 7.5 grams of EPA and DHA per day. You might also wish to think about a prescription for an aromatase inhibitor that will reduce the conversion of testosterone into estrogen, which is the underlying cause of the problem.
