Bad times ahead?

Last Updated Aug 2008

Last week it was announced that global supplies of wheat and corn are at their lowest levels in more than 25 years. At the same time, the price for the same commodities is also at its highest in 25 years. What happened to the Green Revolution that was supposed to easily feed the world? Basically, it has hit a dead end as demand is out stripping supply. This is not only because of a growing demand and more extended droughts throughout the world, but also because there are other uses for these once plentiful crops. For example, you can get ethanol and high-fructose corn syrup from corn, neither of which makes the best possible nutrition. In 1798 Thomas Malthus predicted that a growing population would soon outpace the available food supplies. It appears that he may have just been off by about 200 years.
