Using high dose fish oil to treat SSPE

Last Updated Jan 2008

Q: I've recently read various articles on the use of high-dose fish oil in the treatment of various neurological disorders.  My son has been diagnosed with subacute aclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), which is a persistent infection of the central nervous system caused by an altered form of the measles virus.  What I've read about EPA and DHA has me wondering if high doses of fish oil could provide some benefit to my son.  Have you ever suggested the use of any of your Zone products to a patient with SSPE?  What I've read so far has me very interested in learning more about the use of fish oil as a supplement in my son's diet as well my own.

Thank you, Oscar

Dear Oscar,

A: There are no effective drugs that fight against viral replication; however, prostaglandins derived from DGLA are powerful anti-viral agents. The best way to induce those prostaglandins is by starting with high-dose OmegaRx (about 10 grams per day) for 30 days, then slowly adding EicoRx (one capsule per day).
