The Zone Diet in patients with glycogen storage disorders

Last Updated Jan 2008

Q: My son has been diagnosed with glycogen storage disease IX.  The only treatment is diet.  I was wondering if you knew anything about metabolic disorders and if so would you recommend the Zone Diet for him?  I understand that this class of disorders is very rare and that you may not know enough about them to comment.  But if you are familiar with GSD and have any comments regarding the best diet to give him, I would love to hear from you.

Thank you, Pattye B.

Dear Pattye,

A: I actually had the opportunity to work with an elite college basketball player with glycogen storage disease. The combination of the Zone Diet and OmegaRx at 5 grams of EPA and DHA per day provided significant benefits.
