Post-surgical inflammation

Last Updated Jan 2008

Q: This is probably too specialized of a case, but after reading “The Anti-Inflammation Zone” and having severe pain and a stomach that has continued to grow (without weight gain) since I turned 40, I thought that you may be able to help me.  I have had two ulnar nerve surgeries in 11 months.  My arm still screams pain.  I am taking a huge list of supplements, including enzymes, vitamins and two tablets two times daily of fish oil (EPA 1300 mg, DHA 900mg, Other omega-3s 360mg, and oleic acid Omega 9 112 mg). Last week three months post op my elbow swelled and concerned about infection, the doctor put me on steroids and antibiotics.  I am a 42-year-old female, 5’4” and 120 pounds.  I used to exercise vigorously and miss the endomorphin high.  I still walk almost daily for 30 minutes and more.  I am limited in my ability to stretch now and can't weight-lift at all.  Generally I don't eat food with preservatives due to allergies.  I only use olive oil and a little butter.  I prefer a diet rich in fruits and veggies.  My biggest vice as far as carbs go is a sandwich.  I wanted to know if you have any suggestions.  I would love to have any suggestions as well as the time frame required before I could expect improvement. I hope that you can help me to regain the life I have lost due to disability.

Sincerely, Hilary L.

A: Dear Hilary,

I would suggest significantly increasing your omega-3 fatty acid levels to at least 10 grams of EPA and DHA per day. I would also recommend adding more polyphenols (such as SeaHealth Plus) as additional anti-inflammatory agents.
