Natural fish oil

Last Updated Jan 2008

Q: I am being told from two different wellness practitioners (one my chiropractor and one the son-in-law of a neighbor) that the Innate Choice Omega Sufficiency is a superior product because it is natural fish oil and not manufactured. Could this be true? Are there benefits to fish oil in its natural form that do not or cannot exist in a manufactured form?
A: The Innate fish oil is a standard fish oil product containing 300 mg of EPA and DHA per gram. I checked the purity of the product, and it is reasonably clean, but the low levels of EPA and DHA require much greater amounts to be taken to get adequate levels of EPA and DHA. More refined fish oils, like OmegaRx, have more than double the levels of EPA and DHA with the same purity. The benefit of the more refined fish oil concentrates is that much of other fatty acids that can cause significant gastric distress have been removed. This why the Innate fish oil receives only a 4-star rating from IFOS as opposed to the 5-star IFOS rating for OmegaRx.
