Treating depression

Last Updated Jan 2008

Q: Dear Dr Sears,

I started taking OmegaRx about a month ago, six capsules a day for general wellness as well as to ease eczema. As I suffer mild depression, my doctor just gave me Dosulepin, 25mg a day.  I am uncertain which treatment is suitable.  Would you recommend taking Dosulepin, increase my fish oil dosage, or take both?  How much fish oil should I take? I was also just diagnosed with PCOS and uterus polyps. Will increasing fish oil dosage help?  Thank you.

Sincerely, Carol

A: Dear Carol,

The six capsules per day would provide approximately 3.6 grams of EPA and DHA. Based on published studies, you will need approximately two to three times that amount to see a significant improvement in your depression. The Zone Diet is ideally suited for PCOS because of its ability to reduce hyper-insulinemia that is the underlying cause of PCOS. The combination of the Zone Diet and the high-dose fish oil will also help with the polyps. Discuss with your doctor about whether you should decrease your drug dosage.
