Menopause, diabetes and weight loss

Last Updated Feb 2008

Q: Dear Dr. Sears,

I’m 48 years old, I’m a type 2 diabetic, and I’ve been  going through menopause for the past year. I have weight that I’ve had a tough time trying to lose. I have a back condition, but we walk every day for about an hour. Why is it so difficult to lose weight? I take a low dose HRT for my hot flashes. What’s so hard for me is I have a boyfriend with whom I live. He has a sweet tooth as well as I do. I try to watch what I eat, but now it seems like everything I eat sticks to my body. Do I need to do any other form of exercise?

Alice

A: Dear Alice,

As you go through menopause, estrogen levels drop and insulin levels begin to rise, hence the lack of loss of body fat. Following the Zone Diet is a clinically proven way to reduce the increase of insulin that normally comes from menopause. Your diabetes should respond well to controlling insulin with the Zone. To help with your hormone levels during menopause you may find supplementing with 5g/d of OmegaRx (8 capsules) to be helpful. Substituting a Zone bar in place of chocolate and performing a variety of exercise routines will also be helpful.
