Obesity

Last Updated Feb 2008

Q: Dr. Sears,

There are so many diets, and I must admit I'm not having much success.  I did lose weight on Atkin’s years ago but got tired of the limited diet.  I'm a missionary student at Bible school, and my dollars are low.  I'm 5-foot-8 and weigh 240 pounds.  I work out four times a week and work out with weights twice a week and treadmill/elliptical four times a week. My appetite is high, and I often crave chocolate or sweets.  I tested my glucose, and I'm at 102. My question is will your program help me lose weight?  My abdomen size doesn't seem to budge either.  I'm stuck at about a 44-inch abdomen. I've tried fasting, but it seems to cause a rebound effect. Is it true that Dr. Atkin's diet causes one's body to lose water?  Was his diet valid? Your diet has been criticized for being complex in order to get into the Zone. Is there validity to this?

Thanks, Geary

A: Dear Geary,

The Zone has been scientifically validated (
http://www.drsears.com/WhatistheZone/tabid/380/Default.aspx). To see results, one has to be compliant and consistent. Yo-yo dieting will affect certain enzymes that not only cause the rebound effect but also contribute to a plateau. By following the Zone religiously, you will see results. The Atkin’s diet will cause one to lose lean body mass and water. The Zone too complex? See: http://www.zonediet.com/EATING/QuickStartGuide/tabid/108/Default.aspx The Zone is simple and easy. The key is consistency. All the information you need to understand and apply the Zone is at www.zonediet.com
