Chemical toxicity

Last Updated Mar 2008

Q: My cousin is very sick and degenerating fast. He started getting symptoms about six-eight months ago. He now cannot walk, is incontinent and has dementia off and on. He is also having trouble breathing. They are about to put him into hospital to feed him with a tube. My sister and I think he has chemical toxicity as he was an industrial chemist for a year and then a chemistry teacher for the rest of his working life. Do you think he would respond with fish oil added to his feeding tube? Also do you use tissue analysis or hair analysis or saliva testing to measure toxic chemicals in the body? What do you think of chelation?

A: Chemical toxicity will cause significant inflammation, especially in the brain. The best way to test for chemical toxicity is to sample the adipose tissue because these toxins are usually fat soluble.  As a consequence, chelation will have no benefit in removing them.  The EPA and DHA found in fish oil are the only agents that can easily cross the blood-brain barrier and therefore reduce the inflammation. I would recommend about 10 grams of EPA and DHA mixed with an equal amount of SeaHealth Plus that could be safely added to his feeding tube.
