Heart disease test

Last Updated Mar 2008

Q: The Lp-PLA2 test is being touted by some as a new valuable tool.  What is this substance, and how is the Zone plus omega 3 controlling it?

Thanks, Fred

Dear Fred:

A: PLA2 is phospholipase A2, which is required to release fatty acids from phospholipids so they can be synthesized into eicosanoids. Elevated levels of this enzyme are associated with increased cardiovascular risk. However, this risk is present only if the phospholipids are rich in AA and low in EPA. The AA/EPA ratio is a much more powerful predictor of future cardiovascular risk.
