BFPP

Last Updated Apr 2008

Dr. Sears,

Q: My son, Ean, was diagnosed with BFPP - a rare genetic brain disorder.  Note: I am his adoptive mother. His biological half sister, whom we also adopted, does not have the disorder. Ean has been home with us now for five years, and he is 7 years of age.  A part of this disorder is seizures. Thankfully, Ean has not had any to date.  However, Ean suffers from significant cognitive delays and is only in the 25 percentile for his height and weight.  Without going into the complexity of this disorder, we are reaching out to the medical community to try to find some help in the way of neurological improvements.  While I realize we cannot reverse what he genetically was given, I wondered if some of the recommendations you offer in your book (fish oil, Zone Diet), would be beneficial for Ean.

Kind Regards,
Nancy W.

Dear Nancy,

Q: I would suggest starting at about 10 grams of EPA and DHA per day for 30 days. His cognitive delays and decreased height and weight may be linked by decreased levels of omega-3 fatty acid in the central nervous system.
