Fish oil and low blood pressure

Last Updated Apr 2008

Dear Dr. Sears,

Q:  I would like to start taking fish oil, but I read on your site here that it lowers blood pressure, and I have extremely low blood pressure.  (I don't know the numbers, but nurses are often shocked, and sometimes concerned, at how low it is.) Doctors say it’s OK though.

If I should be taking fish oil, which one of your formulations would you recommend for me, OmegaRx, EicoRx, or EicoPro?  I have obsessive compulsive disorder and also extremely dry skin. Also, I strength train four times a week for 30-45 minutes.

Thank you so much for your time and assistance,
Farha

Dear Farha,

A: I would start out with 10 grams of EPA and DHA per day using OmegaRx. You should see little, if any, change in your blood pressure. Should it decrease, then beginning substituting some the OmegaRx with EicoRx.
