Muscle disorders

Last Updated May 2008

Q: I have a condition called myotonia congenita, which basically means my muscles take a long time to relax from a contracted state. I was wondering if there would be anything that I could try to help this problem.

Thanks, Tallie

Dear Tallie,

A: Myotonia congenita (a genetic disorder caused by a genetic mutation involving the chloride channel of the muscles) may be improved by reducing the arachidonic acid (AA) in the body. The muscle stiffness is caused by an imbalance of eicosanoids derived from AA. The Zone Diet is designed to limit AA, and the EPA in the fish oil will also help reduce the production of AA, which chokes off the production of those eicosanoids (hormones) that are responsible for muscle contraction. I would suggest starting at 2.5 grams per day (that's four OmegaRx capsules) for one week. If no improvement, go to 5 grams per day for two weeks. One would hope to see some improvement; however, you can go up to 7.5 grams per day if necessary.
