Fish oil and HDL

Last Updated May 2008

Dear Dr Sears,

Q: I have been on a high-dose fish oil for two years (4000mg with each 1000 mg having EPA 320 and DHA 240 mgs), and I have noticed a progressive decline in my HDL. My LDL has remained the same and my AA/EPA ratio has been steady at 3. Is it possible that the DHA is affecting my HDL levels?

Regards, Dr Tony H.

Dear Tony,

A: DHA will inhibit the formation of GLA, thus reducing PGE1 formation from DGLA. The end result would be decreased HDL production. I would suggest adding a few capsules of EicoPro to EPA and DHA consumption to increase DGLA levels.
