Extra skin

Last Updated Jul 2008

Q: Dr. Sears, I have gone from a 263 pound person to a 143 pound person on the Zone Diet.  I kept it off for five years; however, I have moved to a new country and have gained 25 pounds back so it’s back to the basics for me.  My question to you is is there any solution short of surgery for the extra hanging skin I now have?  I have exercised, and it doesn’t help.

A:The hanging skin is a result of large weight loss without a corresponding build-up of collagen to keep the skin closely attached to the muscles. I would recommend more strength training as part of your exercise program and getting back on the Zone Diet for adequate amounts of protein.
