Chewing gum

Last Updated Jul 2008

Dear Dr. Sears,

Q: Scientists have said that tests have proven that "People who chewed gum during short and long-term memory tests scored higher than those who did not." Does chewing gum made with artificial sweeteners cause insulin resistance? What are your thoughts about chewing gum, particularly chewing gums made with Xylitol, and the Zone.

Les

Dear Les,

A: Chewing gum appears to increase the release of serotonin in the brain, which would give a calming influence. I would not be too concerned about the small amount of artificial sweeteners in the gum.
