Menstrual cramps

Last Updated Aug 2008

Q: My daughter is 21 and suffers from extreme cramps during her period.  Will the Zone Diet help her?  Are the cramps caused by candida overgrowth and if so, does she need to take care of that first before doing the Zone Diet?

I have been overweight for 10 years now (approximately 25-30 pounds).  I have not had my period for one year now and am 49 years old.  I carry my weight in my torso/chest area.  Will this diet help?  Do you recommend a detox diet along with the Zone, including colonics?

A: The menstrual cramping in your daughter is due to an increase in PGF2 alpha that is derived from arachidonic acid. The Zone Diet coupled with high-dose fish oil will reduce that build-up of arachidonic acid at the end of cycle.

There is no need for a “detox” diet or colonics if you follow the Zone Diet on a regular basis. Your problem is hormonal in basis, and detox diets or colonics will not address the underlying problem, which is increased inflammation.
