Q: I have just been diagnosed with interstitial lung disease. I had the breathing test and did not do that well. I have no idea yet exactly what is causing it and how serious it may be. That said, would the Zone Diet help in most lung disease cases? I am 60 years old and walk about seven miles five days a week on my job, which is that of a P.O. letter carrier.
A: In interstitial lung disease, the walls of the air sacs (alveoli) may become inflamed. The foundation to improve this condition should start with controlling inflammation with the Zone Diet and supplementing with 5 grams per day of fish oil. That would be eight capsules or two teaspoons. Fish oil has been proven to reduce inflammation leading to better oxygen transfer and vasodilation.
