Eye sight

Last Updated Nov 2008

Q: Dr. Sears, I am asking a question on behalf of my son. He plays professional golf and sometime complains about not seeing well. We visited an eye specialist who did a very good examination and came up with the following. The problem is that his eyes adjust very slowly from reading, say, a scorecard to looking down the fairway and visa versa. The adjustment time is up to 90 seconds. His answer to the problem is to avoid reading while on the golf course. Knowing from your books that the food that we eat is the best medicine, we would be grateful if you can give some suggestion of food that could actually help improve the reaction time of the eyes.

Kind regards, Andre

Dear Andre,

A: The problem may be corrected by extra EPA and DHA. The retina has the highest levels of DHA in the body. The delay in processing information may be due to inadequate levels of DHA in the diet. I would suggest about 5 grams of EPA and DHA per day and see if the problem improves.
