Brain injury, Alzheimer's disease

Q: Dr. Sears,

My daughter (41) experienced a severe closed head injury and was in a coma for almost three weeks when she was 17 years old.  Her recovery has been amazing, but she has short-term memory loss, slight seizures (when not on a regular schedule of rest).  Recently she is experiencing more memory problems and is to see a neuro-psychiatrist soon. In one of your articles you recommend fish oil immediately after the injury and as the brain heals.  Is there any hope or treatment you would recommend for her situation.

Thank you. Anne W.

Dear Anne,

A: Based on our work with brain trauma patients, I would recommend about 10 to 15 grams of EPA and DHA per day. The results to date have been very fruitful in rebuilding brain tissue.
